Chouest ice class AHTS reviewed by ABS

    News // December 8, 2009

ABS has been selected by Shell Alaska to class a 360ft anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel currently under construction at the Edison Chouest shipyard in Galliano, LA.

The 360ft double-hull AHTS vessel will play a major role in Shell’s Alaska operations and is being designed for zero discharge, low engine noise and minimal airborne emissions.

Slated for delivery in 2012, Hull 247 is Chouest’s largest vessel to date and will operate in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas of the Outer Continental Shelf, classed to ABS Ice Class A3.

In addition to its duties in support of Shell Offshore Inc’s drilling and exploration activities, the ship will operate as a standby-safety vessel with fire-fighting capabilities, provide oil spill response support, and heliport and refueling capabilities to support personnel transfer, ice management and surveys.
