Polarcus announces newbuild vessel namesVessel & ROV News // November 21, 2008
Over 500 entries were submitted during a competition in which Polarcus employees were asked to propose vessels names that reflected the spirit and ethos of the company.
An internal advisory committee then made the final selection.
The first two vessels, of Ulstein Design type SX124, will be named:
• Polarcus Nadia
• Polarcus Naila
These are derived from Arabic female names and were chosen to signify the successful arrival of the company - in Arabic Nadia means ‘the beginning, first' and Naila ‘acquirer, one who succeeds'.
The Polarcus Nadia and Polarcus Naila are high-end 3D seismic vessels capable of towing up to 12 streamers. Polarcus Naila will furthermore incorporate the company's first lateral streamer steering control system that is expected to deliver significant improvements in operational efficiency. Both vessels are currently under construction in Dubai and will be operational in the fourth quarter of 2009.
"These are excellent choices to mark the arrival of Polarcus into the global marine seismic market," commented Rolf Ronningen, CEO Polarcus. "The names Polarcus Nadia and Polarcus Naila reflect the company's pioneering spirit and our determination to establish ourselves as a leading industry player."
Arabic female names have also been selected for the following four vessels. The two Ulstein Design type SX133 vessels will be named:
• Polarcus Samur, meaning ‘swift, fleet'
• Polarcus Selma, meaning ‘secure'
Both were chosen to highlight the particular capabilities of these multipurpose 6 streamer 3D vessels, such as their high transit speeds and their ICE 1A class notation.
Construction on Polarcus Samur began in September and the steel cutting for Polarcus Selma commenced early November 2008.
Meanwhile the two Ulstein Design type SX134 vessels, both ICE 1A class, high-end 12 streamer 3D seismic vessels, will be named:
• Polarcus Asima, meaning ‘protector'
• Polarcus Alima, meaning ‘wise'.
