Two "firsts" with BP West of Shetland surveyProjects and Operations // August 14, 2008
Geowave Master has successfully completed Wavefield's first ever survey for BP west of the Shetland Isles.
The 3-D survey included an undershoot of the Schiehallion FPSO which also involved a second 'first' for Wavefield Inseis.
The undershoot incorporated the first use of a new and unique system of communication between vessels.
The system uses three different links with different characteristics.
A vessel-satellite-vessel link eliminates any line of sight issues, a high bandwidth terrestrial radio link based on WiMAX technology prioritizes acquisition critical traffic, and a low bandwidth radio link ensures communication at long range.
Commenting on the system Willy Forland, Navigation Manager at Wavefield Inseis stated: “The way we are doing this with three parallel links all capable of carrying the acquisition critical data, together with the systems transparent and automatic routing of the traffic is unique in the seismic industry and ensures high quality and reliable communications for multi-vessel operations such as undershooting and wide-azimuth surveys.”
