Converteam secures order for DP 3 systems for Bourbon IMR vessels

    News // April 4, 2008

Converteam in the UK has secured its single largest order for multiple Class 3 dynamic positioning (DP) systems from
Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group Co Ltd for French owner Bourbon.

The DP 3 systems are for 10 GPA696 Inspection Maintenance & Repair (IMR) vessels currently being built by Zhejiang shipyard, a subsidiary of Sinopacific, in Ningbo, near Shanghai.

Converteam will deliver the systems from its UK facility with local support and commissioning provided by Converteam’s facility in Shanghai.

The first system is due for delivery in January 2009. Thereafter, a DP 3 system will be installed every 10 weeks, with commissioning to follow until the contract ends in 2011.

DP3 is the highest class of dynamic positioning for vessels requiring high levels of redundancy and separation to ensure the system can withstand the impact of fire and flood.

Converteam’s DP configuration has separate dual controllers with a back up system in an alternative location.

In addition an independent joystick system, manual thruster
control and vessel automation system and position reference system complete the Converteam supply to meet Bureau Veritas (BV) rules.

Andy Cooper, Offshore and Merchant Business Director for Converteam UK Ltd said: "This is an unprecedented order in our history of providing top class dynamic positioning systems. The equipment will be developed and manufactured at our Rugby facility. We look forward to installing our first system for Zhejiang within the next 12 months.”
