Aker Promar to build new yard in Rio

    Yard News // November 30, 2006

LR-Fairplay's Daily News of November 29th reported that Aker Yards and its Brazilian partner Promar are to build a new Reais100 million (US$46 million) shipyard in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Said Fairplay: "Wagner Victer, the state's outgoing minister responsible for shipbuilding announced... that the yard - to be built in the municipality of Quissama - will create 3,600 new jobs, one-third of which will be in the yard itself.

“This is excellent news for the state of Rio de Janeiro and shows how buoyant the shipbuilding industry is in Rio,” said Victer.

A senior source at Aker Promar told Fairplay recently that the company was looking for a suitable site at Quissama, but were waiting for the final go-ahead, which has now been granted.

Fairplay said Aker Promar's Niteroi site has become too small for the work currently in the orderbook.
