Toisa Shipping has re-entered the newbuilding market, and has announced that the latest newbuild ordered by Sealion Shipping Ltd on behalf of Toisa is a large IRM Class, Saturation Diving Support Vessel, construction of which has been awarded to Kleven Maritime’s Kleven Verft in Norway.
The vessel is based on a lengthened version of the successful MT 6016 design from Marin Teknikk, the well known firm of Norwegian naval architects, and will enter service in December 2007.
Designed to support world-wide diving operations, the outline specification for the MT 6016 L includes a length overall of 103.7m, beam of 19.7m, depth of 7.70m, DP to DNV/IMO Class 2, accommodation for 100, a deck area of 900m2, a 140 tonne crane and two 5 tonne cranes.
The dive system includes an in-built 12 man saturation dive system, rated to 300m, three chambers, three man single bell and 12 man Hyperbaric lifeboat. The helideck is rated for a Sikorsky S92 (D-value 21m), and propulsion machinery will be diesel electric with two 1,050kW tunnel thrusters, a single 880kW drop-down azimuthing unit and a pair of 2,200kW Azipods for main propulsion, providing a service speed of 15.5 knots.
Sealion said the order “represents a positive recognition that, not only is there a clear and increasing demand for saturation diving vessels around the world, but that the current aging fleet of such vessels will not be able to service the needs of the offshore oil and gas industry in the future without such new vessels.”
Higher and more demanding standards in safety, dynamic positioning operations, saturation diving and the use of environmentally sensitive vessels can only be met by the introduction of new vessels into the world fleet, noted Sealion, which currently operates four saturation DSVs in its modern fleet of 19 offshore support vessels.
