Man dies in accident on CSO Seawell

    News // February 23, 2006

A 34 year old man working aboard Cal Dive's MSV Seawell died earlier this week in what police have described as a "work-related incident."

The incident onboard Seawell took place at about 2100 GMT on Monday whilst the ship was approximately 100 miles east of Aberdeen.

An investigation team, including the Health and Safety Executive, has since visited the vessel. Seawell was contracted to Shell at the time and was working near the Gannet platform in the North Sea.

A spokesperson for Aberdeen-based Cal Dive told BBC Scotland that the incident happened during a routine wireline operation (where tools are moved in and out of wells). Grampian Police said a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

The man, who had not been named at the time of writing, worked for TDM International, a company based in Aberdeen Business Centre.

A spokesman the Health and Safety Executive said the man was struck by a mandrill unit weighing 600lb that caused fatal injuries.
