Doha adds another to Challenger seriesVessel & ROV News // January 19, 2006
Doha Marine Services in Qatar has provided Offshore Shipping Online with details of another recent addition to its fleet, in addition to DMS Constructor, the Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) vessel delivered to the company recently.
The latest vessel takes the form of DMS Challenger III, a multipurpose supply vessel delivered by Fujian Mawei shipyard in China at the end of November.
The vessel is the third in series of Challenger class vessels being built at Fujian Mawei for the company.
DMS Challenger III is an improved version of earlier vessels and like the first two ships in the class was designed by Khiam Chuan Marine Pte Ltd in Singapore. The vessel was built in accordance with the rules and under the inspection of the ABS.
The 57.5m long has a breadth of 13.8m and is driven by two Caterpillar 3516B main engines each developing 2,000bhp whilst turning at 1,800rpm. The ship is equipped with Schottel SRP-1212FP azimuthing propulsion units that provide a high level of manoeuvrability, optimum efficiency and cost-effective operation.
DMS Challenger III can attain a maximum speed of 12.0 knots and an economical speed of 10 knots. The vessel is also equipped with Schottel STT-330 LK CP, 500 kW controllable-pitch forward tunnel thrusters.
The new vessel has a clear deck area of 376m2 and deck cargo carrying capacity of 500 tonnes, and ample tank capacities.
DMS CHallenger III has the facility to be upgraded to DP 1, there is under-deck stiffening for a pedestal crane, and the vessel is also classed FIFI-1.
