    ROV wins Millennium award

    News // March 22, 2000
Slingsby Engineering Ltd has announced that its Olympian Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) has won Millennium Product status. The Olympian was granted Millennium Products status by the Design Council in the UK after Prime Minister Tony Blair challenged businesses to show that Britain is the creative powerhouse of the world. The news was announced by the Prime Minister at the launch of the fifth tranche of the Design Council's Millennium Products initiative.

The Olympian is the latest workclass ROV to be developed by Slingsby Engineering Ltd and is designed for carrying out construction, repair and maintenance tasks on subsea oil installations. The system can perform these tasks down to 3,000 metres in Beaufort Sea State six sea conditions.

The Olympian incorporates technology proven on SEL's previous ROVs and has a number of features to aid the operator and extend mission times. These include a TA40 manipulator system with the Advanced Digital Controller, and the highly successful SlingsbyTether Management System, 37 of which have been built to date.

As a Millennium Product, Olympian is being exhibited at the Spiral of Innovation in the Millennium Dome. Andrew Summers, Chief Executive of the Design Council said: 'We offer our warmest congratulations to Slingsby Engineering for the selection of Olympian as a Millennium Product. We sincerely hope that Olympian will be a big success for the company, and we hope that Millennium Products status will encourage Slingsby Engineering in further innovations'.
