MMS approves FPSOs in Gulf of Mexico

    News // January 4, 2002
The Minerals Management Service (MMS) in the US has announced that it will accept applications for the use of Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The decision was taken after work on an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the use of FPSOs was completed. In the EIS, permanently moored, double hulled, and conventional ship-shaped FPSOs with storage capacities of up to 1 million barrels of crudewere evaluated.

In a statement, the MMS said: "While we will accept applications for the use of FPSOs, each will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis." She also noted that the decision did not approve any specific FPSO project, but provided a foundation for the consideration of specific requests to use FPSOs in future.
