    Aberdeen sets a record

    News // August 5, 2005
Seabrokers reports that the number of oil-related vessels handled in Aberdeen Harbour last year was the highest for more than a decade.

Ships serving the offshore industry accounted for 5,002 arrivals, up 650 on 2003. In 1993 5,078 oil-related vessels berthed at the port. The offshore industry set another record of 12.9mgt of shipping, an increase of more than two million gross tonnes on2003.

The overall tonnage of shipping also set a record for the sixth year in succession at 21.1mgt with total vessel arrivals up at more than 8,300.

According to Aberdeen Harbour Board chief executive Barclay Braithwaite the redevelopmentprogramme successfully contributed to the port's increased handling capacity, thereby reinforcing its position as the centre of activity.

£4.5 million of the current five-year budget of £36 million will be used for the reconstruction of two multi-user deepwater berths at Albert Quay West.
