Rosy forecast for offshore wind power

    News // April 26, 2002
The UK is poised to exploit the potential of offshore wind, Energy Minister Brian Wilson predicted at a major conference organised by the British Wind Energy Association.

Mr Wilson was speaking on the day he announced he had granted consent for Britain's largest wind farm at Scroby Sands, off Great Yarmouth, and also revealed that a 74m fund to promote offshore wind could be twice over subscribed, indicating the growinginterest from companiesin developing wind power projects.

In a key note speech to the 'Offshore Wind 2002' conference Mr Wilson said: "A real momentum is building for off-shore renewables and not just for wind but wave and other marine-based technologies such as wave and tidal. The recent publication of the PIU's Energy Review was thelatest in a sequence of signals that wind energy can play an important role in helping us to meet our challenging target of sourcing 10 per cent of electricity from renewables and reduce the UK'scarbon emissions".
