Blue Stream pipelines in place and ready for operation

    News // November 22, 2002
Blue Stream, the world's deepest pipeline, has been completed.

Blue Stream is well over 1000m deeper than any other main trunkline ever constructed, reaching depths up to 2,150m in the Black Sea. The pipelines, stretching from Southern Russia to Turkey, were installed without any significant incidents. The installation of the two parallel 24-inch pipelines was extremely challenging due to the extreme water depths and irregular ocean floor. The J-lay technique was developed specifically for the project and installed onboard the S 7000, Saipem's offshoreconstruction vessel.

Currently, the pipelines are undergoing pressure-testing, cleaning, pigging and drying. Within a few months, the first gas is expected to reach the shores of Turkey, the fastest growing energy consumer in the world.

The Blue Stream project is a joint venture between Russia's OAO Gazprom and Snam SpA in Italy.
