Inter-vessel survey data standard telemetry protocol released by IMCA

    News // April 25, 2003
With the growing trend towards multi-vessel operations and with offshore survey contractors often using different survey navigation software suites, IMCA's Offshore Survey Division has produced this protocol to promote a level of standardisation in datatelemetry.

A review of existing standards indicated that currently nothing was in use or even in existence that met the varied requirements of survey projects undertaken by IMCA's contractor members and it was felt to be in the industry's interests that there should be.

The simple format was designed to be easily implemented and used. The protocol has undergone extensive reviews and an inter-company trial was undertaken to test the workings of different systems together prior to publication.

The guidance document provides full details on the protocol, including generic and specific messages and examples of each with clear definitions throughout.

IMCA is now seeking to promote its use by other offshore survey contractors and software developers, who it believes could benefit in the same way as contractor members already adopting the protocol.

The code is available at 5.00 to members and 10.00 to non-members.
