Total has confirmed that chairman and CEO Christophe de Margerie died on 20 October in a plane crash at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow, following a collision with a snow plough.
Four people were found dead at the scene of the accident, including three crew of the private aircraft in which Mr de Margerie was travelling.
Mr de Margerie, who was 63, was an opponent of Western economic sanctions against Russia, and is understood to have been attending a meeting on foreign investment with Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev.
Total is France’s second-biggest listed company, with a market value of €102 billion. It is the fourth largest western oil company, behind Exxon, Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron.
