SMD unveils ROV training simulatorTraining // September 12, 2014
SMD has announced the release of an ROV training simulator. SMD's R&D department have been working together with technology partner TreeC to develop a new dynamic and intuitive simulator which addresses current training market needs and requirements, with a particular focus on operator/pilot training and mission planning and rehearsal.
The new simulator has been developed to provide easy and intuitive human machine interface via the ROV console control desk, and covers not only work class ROVs, but also future trenching and subsea mining vehicles.
Mahesh Menon, SMD’s Research and Development manager, said: "The market continuously provides new challenges which must be overcome; new operating locations mean deeper waters, challenging geographical areas, and dynamic working environments. The result of this is an increase in customer demand for cost effective systems with higher reliability & performance. In order to satisfy these demands we have worked to create a simulator to increase operation efficiency and decrease downtime through mission replays and planning.

With all of this in mind SMD has developed an IMCA Class A simulator platform that incorporates one of the most advanced physics engines on the market. The new simulator produces dynamic content creation, and interaction of equipment in the virtual environment. The system also offers higher simulation efficiency and uses imagery based on realistic subsea working environments for better visualisation.
SMD’s future-proof approach, protects customer investment with a platform which runs on the latest PC hardware and along with software and benefits from future upgrade paths.
The new simulator enables SMD and its customers to offer scenario creation capabilities.
The system has the capability to provide real-time and fully-configurable environment on the simulation platform. This includes conditions of the area (current, visibility etc.) and fault creation for training purposes, while also provides playback and review facilities on the simulation for mission rehearsal and training review.
3D models can be imported into scenario content with collision mapping points, offering an improved and bespoke training solution capability with a cost saving advantage; where previously customers would have to return to the simulator provider for any new mission planning functions.
This functionality means users can easily create and modify their own scenarios, and utilise multiple vehicles and subsea equipment within one virtual environment. All of this functionality combined allows enhanced mission planning and rehearsal capabilities.
The simulator’s enhanced tailor-made mission planning and rehearsal capabilities mean the likes of survey tasks and IRM activities can be performed ‘dry’ and safe.
Further evolution of the simulator includes tether break management and component identifier among many others. The platform is capable of incorporating multiple and various facets of the subsea environment and can simulate, package and deliver the data based on what the customer requires. This one true platform enables the customer to switch from the real world to the virtual world, and back.
