Van Oord orders DP2 cable layerVessel & ROV News // September 9, 2013
Van Oord has ordered a new cable-layer. The unit will be built at Damen Shipyards’ wharf in Romania and will be completed at the end of 2014. It is intended for the installation of cables for offshore windfarms.
Van Oord is making preparations for the Gemini windfarm project, which will be constructed 60km to the north of Schiermonnikoog, one of the Dutch Wadden Islands. The cable-laying vessel will be deployed at that site, among many others.
The new unit is a multipurpose vessel with a deadweight of 8,500 tonnes, a length of 120m, beam of 28m and a DP2 dynamic positioning system. It will be equipped with a cable carousel with a capacity of more than 5,000 tonnes and an offshore crane that will enable it to lay heavy and long export cables. 90 people can be accommodated.
