QUEST 5 WROV successfully dives to 4,000m in trials

    Vessel & ROV News // August 1, 2003
The QUEST 5 WROV from ALSTOM Schilling Robotics (ASR) successfully completed its first dive to 4,000m in sea trials off the Canary Islands in June, the deepest dive ever made by a commercially available electric work-class ROV.

The QUEST 5 is an ultra deepwater, free-swimming system with 5,000m of 17.5mm NSW umbilical cable.

After sea trials, the QUEST 5 system will support scientific research programs for the DFG Research Center Ocean Margins (RCOM), a marine research institution at the University of Bremen. From the sea trials site, RCOM's director, Professor Gerold Wefer, reported, "All the instruments we tested at 4,000m functioned well. Our group is very impressed by the compact size, easy access to the parts, high power, and smooth operation of the vehicle."
