NSW starts cable laying operations with DP2 vesselVessel & ROV News // November 23, 2012
Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke (NSW) in Germany, a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Cable, recently took delivery of a newly refurbished DP2 cable laying vessel under a long term charter agreement with Meriaura.
The vessel, Aura, has been refurbished to the NSW's specification, and will be used for various infield array and export cable projects that the company currently has in its order backlog.
Part of the cable-laying spread on the vessel will be NSW’s new heavy-duty cable trencher SeaREX, which was supplied by SMD in the UK earlier this year.
As part of the refurbishment, Aura was upgraded to dynamic positioning (DP) 2 class and extra accommodation was fitted. A heave compensated crane was also fitted.
The vessel's beam was also increased in order to accommodate a 23m wide turntable. The vessels' electrical generation capacity was upgraded together with the installation of an A frame launch and recovery system for the SeaREX.
