Aker Promar invests US$100 million in new yard in Brazil

    News // June 11, 2004
Fairplay (ww.fairplay.co.uk) reports that Aker Promar shipyard group in Rio de Janeiro is to go ahead with its ambitious scheme to invest US$100 million in the construction of a new shipyard in the port of Rio Grande.

On completion, it will be the largest shipyard in the southern hemisphere and will create at least 4,000 new jobs.

The Brazilian government does not want so much of Brazil's burgeoning cargovolumes to be transported by foreign carriers and is trying to build up theBrazilian flag fleet so that it carries 20 per cent of national cargoes, rather than the current 4-5 per cent, said Fairplay.
