    Seaway Heavy Lifting to support Gwynt y Môr offshore windfarm

    Seaway Heavy Lifting has been awarded a contract to transport and install two substation topsides as part of the Gwynt y Môr offshore windfarm project.

    At 576MW, Gwynt y Môr will be one of the largest offshore wind farms currently in
    construction in Europe, and is being built by RWE npower renewables. The project is a
    shared investment between partners RWE Innogy, Stadtwerke München GmbH and
    Siemens(1). Once fully operational, energy generation from Gwynt y Môr is expected to be equivalent to the average annual needs of around 400,000 homes.

    The Gwynt y Môr project, which is located 18km offshore from the North Wales coast,
    consists of 160 turbines (total of 576 MW) and two substations. The project is a joint
    development between RWE Innogy, Stadtwerke München and Siemens.

    Each substation consists of a piled jacket structure and a topside, with a weight of 1,500 tonnes and are located in water depths of about 24m LAT.

    Seaway Heavy Lifting will carry out the transportation and offshore installation of both of the two topsides, and will also provide related project management and engineering service.

    The work is scheduled for the summer of 2012 and Seaway Heavy Lifting will use one of their HLVs, either Stanislav Yudin or Oleg Strashnov.

    The whole installation will be optimised by Seaway Heavy Lifting by using offshore installation experience gained during platform installation in the oil and gas and offshore wind markets.

    The project will be executed based on a lump sum installation contract, where the weather risk is taken by Seaway Heavy Lifting. This type of contract results in a safe, sound and reliable installation to meet the project schedule.

    The offshore wind farm is being constructed 13km off the North Wales coast, in
    water depths of 12-28m, and was granted approval by DECC (Department of Energy
    and Climate Change) back in December 2008.
