    DP Centre opens in Rio

    Company News // April 5, 2011

The DP Centre in Brazil has successfully moved from Macae to Rio de Janeiro and ran its first DP course at the new facility in early March 2011.

The DP Centre was launched in Brazil in 2007 and after what it called "four good years" in Macae it was felt that it would be more advantageous to be positioned in Rio at the hub of the Brazilian transport network and in the heart of Brazil’s biggest city.

The new office is situated close to Academia Brasileira de Letras and is a 10 minute walk from Santos Dumont Airport; it is also close to the Metro and has very good parking facilities in the local area.

The training centre has state of the art Converteam DP equipment and the courses are run by either Jose Pallas Carbonell or Waltenir Olivera who are both experienced DP Instructors.

As with all of the five DP Centre’s around the world the Brazilian centre courses are validated by the Nautical Institute and the course content is designed to a very high standard by the vastly experienced DP Centre team around the globe.

The Rio Centre will be providing courses to a wide array of vessel owners/managers in a market that is expanding extremely quickly in South America, with dozens of new build DP vessels on order from shipyards across the continent and a massive shortage of DP qualified deck officers predicted by 2013.

The rules concerning non-Brazilian officers and crew working on Brazilian registered vessels are going to be changing as well so that in the near future the marine crews will have to be 100 per cent Brazilian nationals so foreign crew will not be allowed and meaning the shortage will be only be increased.

Peter Aylott, the COO of the Training division of the C-MAR Group said: "The new offices and training facility in Rio de Janeiro underlines C-MAR's intent to build a real presence in Brazil."

"This will be our first C-MAR owned Brazilian training facility and it more than doubles our capacity compared to the previous provision in Macae. We are the first global DP training provider to establish a physical presence in downtown Rio and we are confident that this will deliver further market penetration in a region with vast potential."
