Petition calls for Med oil moratorium

    News // February 2, 2011

Mediterranean countries and the EU are being petitioned to proceed with a moratorium on new offshore drilling operations and to put in place plans to decommission existing platforms.

The call for action has been proposed in an online petition brought about by the Mediterranean SOS Network – who include Seas At Risk member Liga para a Protecção da Natureza (LPN).

The proposal demands governments “not to undermine the future of the Mediterranean region and its people” and argues that due to the Mediterranean’s semi-enclosed sea, with a limited rate of water renewal, a similar disaster to that of the BP Gulf oil spill "would entail horrendous consequences for the region."

Alongside the demand for decommissioning of existing platforms, the petition also outlines the need for maintaining the safeguards that will ensure the safe operation of the existing platforms, and for the promotion of transnational cooperation and the enhancement of the emergency response in case of an accident.

The petition also calls on the United Nations Environmental Programme/ Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) to take initiative regarding the proper implementation of the Barcelona Convention and its related Protocols.
